I had not seen one in MANY years. But, here it was in Home Depot’s parking lot in El Paso today. Wow. Looked to be in pretty good shape.
When I first saw it across the street, from the back I almost thought it was an early Datsun. But, no.
Anyway, feast your eyes.

Lol I learned to drive stick on a UHaul mini mover version of the Courier. It was fun.

I am not certain I've ever seen a Ford Courier. Seen an early Datsun though and I see the resemblance.

I “think” it’s a very early version. I forgot if Ford and Nissan had a romance goin g back then (like GM and Isuzu did), but the tailgate and rear bed are a dead ringer for the late 60s Datsun pickup.

The truck you snapped is in better shape than the one I snapped.

That style bed was never very popular here, so it limits the pool. My neighbor has a very early first generation Datsun pickup that is so unbelievably perfect you are afraid to breathe on or touch it. Clearly it had never been been used at all. Beautiful truck though.

Yep, this is a really early one, no newer than 1976.
These were Mazda-based.

I forgot about those little U- Hauls. Even in the age of 55 mph, those must have been dangerously slow.
When I was a kid, my grandpa had one of the 80s style Couriers as a runabout vehicle (other was a big F250 type thing to tow a camper) - it seemed really slow to me then, too (driver could have been a part of it). Come to think of it, his last new car was a dustbuster Lumina van - fun choice.

Wow. That’s a solid TIL... Had no idea that Ford and Mazda were exchanging Handies that early.
Plus, a Mazda pickup then? Thanks for filling in the gaps in this backstory.

They all rusted to the ground in Hawaii, I don’t think I’ve seen one since the 80's.

I learnt to drive a stick in one. I had an uncle who was a farmer and he had a Courier as a gas saving runabout. It had an audible “ticker” in the speedo (and visible indicator dots on the face) that would help to let you know when to shift. It had no tach. Haven’t seen one in years.
